Core bench skills and instruments: balances, glassware, pipetting, buffers, centrifuges, chromatography, spectrophotometry, calibration, microscopy and aseptic technique.
Leads to: Biochemist, Biological Technician, Medical Laboratory Technologist, Chemist, Materials Scientist
Before you start
This course builds on Lab Safety Fundamentals and Chemistry Fundamentals. Take them first if you are new to the topic.
About this course
An intermediate course for future biochemists, biological technicians, medical laboratory technologists, chemists and materials scientists. The first module covers core bench skills: weighing and measuring to the stated precision, using a micropipette accurately, and calculating and preparing solutions and buffers. The second module explains separation and analysis: balancing and running a centrifuge, how TLC, HPLC and GC separate mixtures, and building a Beer-Lambert standard curve for spectrophotometry. The third module covers instruments and upkeep: calibrating a pH meter and keeping the log, comparing fluorescence and electron microscopy, and the habits of aseptic technique. Python activities are fill-in-the-blank, so no programming background is needed. Everything here is awareness level: it does not replace supervised training in your teaching lab or workplace, and every activity is a paper, data or plain-water exercise that is safe to do at home. Lab careers also have formal requirements, such as a NAACLS-accredited program and ASCP certification for medical laboratory scientists, a chemistry or biology degree with lab coursework, and on-the-job GMP training in regulated manufacturing.
