Before you start

This course builds on Lab Techniques & Instrumentation, Statistics Fundamentals and Spreadsheets for Data Work. Take them first if you are new to the topic.

About this course

An intermediate course for future biochemists, biological technicians, medical laboratory technologists, chemists and materials scientists, about the data and quality systems that make lab results trustworthy. The first module covers records and integrity: writing ALCOA+ notebook entries, how a sample moves through a LIMS or LIS, and querying sample results by batch and date in SQL. The second module covers quality control: Levey-Jennings charts and Westgard rules, calibration curves with LOD and LOQ, and propagating measurement uncertainty. The third module covers quality systems: SOPs, deviations and CAPA, audits and accreditation (ISO/IEC 17025, ISO 15189, CLIA, CAP, GMP and GLP), and deciding when a result may be rejected or repeated. Python and SQL activities are fill-in-the-blank and use only the standard library and SQLite, so no programming background is needed. Every activity is a paper or data exercise. Real lab quality work also depends on supervised training and formal credentials, such as a NAACLS-accredited program and ASCP certification for medical laboratory scientists, and on-the-job GMP training in regulated manufacturing.
