Lab Safety Fundamentals
Recognise lab hazards, read GHS labels and Safety Data Sheets, choose PPE, and understand the training and records that keep labs safe.
Leads to: Biochemist, Biological Technician, Medical Laboratory Technologist, Chemist, Physicist, Materials Scientist
About this course
Every lab career, from biological technician and medical laboratory technologist to chemist, physicist and materials scientist, starts with safety. This beginner course teaches the ideas you need to recognise hazards and follow your lab's rules: reading a GHS label and its pictograms, finding PPE, storage and spill information in a Safety Data Sheet, and matching biological agents and practices to biosafety levels 1 to 4. The second module covers choosing PPE, when to use a chemical fume hood versus a biosafety cabinet, and how waste, sharps and spills are handled. The final module looks at safety culture: reporting incidents and near misses, following SOPs and writing a simple risk assessment, and planning the training your institution requires. It is awareness-level only: it does not replace the hands-on training and supervision your employer or institution must provide, and every activity is a paper or reading exercise that is safe to do at home.
Course content
Module 1
Lab Hazards
3 lessons · 1h 25mRead GHS labels and pictograms, find what you need in a Safety Data Sheet, and match biological work to biosafety levels.
- 20mChemical hazards and the GHS labelReading
Read a GHS chemical label: the signal word, hazard and precautionary statements, and the nine pictograms.
- 45mReading a Safety Data SheetReading
Find hazards, PPE, storage, spill and first-aid information in the 16 sections of a Safety Data Sheet.
- 20mBiosafety levelsReading
Match biological agents, practices and facilities to biosafety levels 1 to 4.
Module 2
PPE and Safe Practice
3 lessons · 1h 25mChoose PPE, use fume hoods and biosafety cabinets for the right jobs, and follow waste, sharps and spill procedures.
- 20mChoosing PPEReading
Use the hierarchy of controls and a procedure's hazards to select eye, hand, body and foot protection.
- 20mFume hoods and biosafety cabinetsReading
Explain what a chemical fume hood and a biosafety cabinet each protect, and the habits that keep them working.
- 45mWaste, sharps, and spillsReading
Segregate chemical, biological and sharps waste, and follow the decide-alert-contain steps of a spill procedure.
Module 3
Safety Culture and Records
3 lessons · 2h 20mReport incidents and near misses, work from SOPs and risk assessments, and plan the training your institution requires.
- 45mIncidents and near missesReading
Explain why near misses matter, respond to an incident, and write a clear, blame-free incident report.
- 50mFollowing SOPs and risk assessmentsReading
Read a lab SOP, and complete a simple risk assessment using likelihood, severity and the hierarchy of controls.
- 45mRequired training and where to get itReading
Plan the safety training a lab job or program will require, from general lab safety to bloodborne pathogens, lasers and radiation.
