Before you start

This course builds on Molecular Biology Methods and Lab Data & Quality. Take them first if you are new to the topic.

About this course

A mid-level course for future biochemists and biological technicians, about growing cells and turning them into products. The first module covers cell culture: media and growth conditions, passaging and counting cells with a hemocytometer, and recognising and responding to contamination, including mycoplasma and misidentified cell lines. The second module covers bioprocessing: microbial growth curves and growth rates, how bioreactors control temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen and feeding during scale-up, and the downstream steps that purify a product such as a monoclonal antibody. The third module covers GMP manufacturing: working to a batch record with good documentation practice, equipment qualification (IQ, OQ, PQ) and cleanroom gowning, and reviewing batch data in SQL to flag out-of-specification results. Python and SQL activities are fill-in-the-blank and use only the standard library and SQLite. Every activity is a paper, data or kitchen-safe exercise: nothing here involves cells, microbes, culture reagents or hazardous chemicals at home. Real cell culture and GMP work need supervised training at the right biosafety level in a teaching or employer lab, a degree with lab coursework, and the employer's own GMP training.
