Before you start

This course builds on Workplace Safety & Tools and Technical Drawing & CAD Basics. Take them first if you are new to the topic.

About this course

An intermediate course for future industrial machinery mechanics and millwrights. You will identify bearing types and read failure signs; tension belts and check chain slack and coupling alignment; calculate gear ratios, speeds and torque; read hydraulic schematics and trace pneumatic circuits; diagnose pump problems such as cavitation; choose a lubricant and a relubrication interval; write a preventive maintenance work order the way a CMMS stores it; plan a lift on paper with sling angles and rated capacities; and name the main welding processes and their hazards. Prerequisites are Workplace Safety & Tools (hazards, PPE, lockout/tagout) and Technical Drawing & CAD Basics (reading drawings). Hands-on tasks use paper, spreadsheets, household models and free tools only. This course is awareness and knowledge: working on real machinery, lifting loads or welding requires employer training, a qualified supervisor and, for most mechanic roles, an apprenticeship or an associate degree in industrial maintenance.
