Before you start
This course builds on Electrical Circuits and Workplace Safety & Tools. Take them first if you are new to the topic.
About this course
A mid-level course for electricians, industrial machinery mechanics and electrical engineers who work on automated equipment. You will read start/stop seal-in circuits and interlocks on ladder diagrams; match proximity, photoelectric and analog sensors to applications; explain how a variable frequency drive controls motor speed; describe PLC hardware, I/O and the scan cycle; simulate seal-in, interlock, timer and counter logic in small browser exercises; explain the roles of HMI and SCADA systems; isolate an I/O fault with a systematic method; explain machine guarding, emergency stops and safety relays; and read vibration and thermal data for predictive maintenance. Prerequisites are Electrical Circuits and Workplace Safety & Tools. The code activities are fill-in-the-blank: the program already runs and you write one rung or formula, so no programming course is needed. Practice uses simulators and paper only; never work on live control panels without employer training, supervision and the required qualifications, and for electricians a registered apprenticeship and licence.
Course content
Module 1
Relay Logic
3 lessons · 1h 6mLadder diagrams, start/stop seal-in circuits and interlocks, the sensors and actuators that connect controls to a machine, and variable frequency drives.
- 17mLadder diagramsReading
Read a ladder diagram, including a three-wire start/stop seal-in circuit with overload protection and an interlock.
- 13mSensors and actuatorsReading
Match limit switches, proximity, photoelectric and analog sensors to applications, and name the actuators that controls drive.
- 36mMotor drives (VFDs)Reading
Explain how a variable frequency drive turns fixed AC into variable frequency to control an induction motor's speed.
Module 2
PLC Programming
3 lessons · 1h 50mPLC hardware, I/O and the scan cycle, then ladder logic programming with seal-ins, interlocks, timers and counters in browser simulations.
- 26mPLC hardware and scan cycleReading
Explain the parts of a PLC, how inputs and outputs are addressed, and how the scan cycle reads, solves and writes.
- 46mLadder logic programmingReading
Write PLC ladder logic for a seal-in with an interlock and simulate it scan by scan.
- 38mTimers and countersReading
Use on-delay timers (TON) and up-counters (CTU) in PLC logic, and simulate a counting station with a timed delay.
Module 3
Automation Systems
4 lessons · 2h 18mHMI and SCADA, systematic troubleshooting of automated machines, machine safety and safety relays, and reliability with vibration and thermal data.
- 13mHMI and SCADAReading
Explain what HMIs and SCADA systems do, how they connect to PLCs, and why alarm design and OT security matter.
- 41mTroubleshooting automated systemsReading
Isolate an input or output fault on an automated machine with a systematic, half-splitting method.
- 51mMachine safetyReading
Explain machine guarding, emergency stops, safety relays and safety-rated devices, and how they differ from lockout.
- 33mReliability and predictive maintenanceReading
Read vibration and thermal data to spot developing faults, and calculate RMS, crest factor and trends.
