The math, science, computing, and habits every STEM career is built on.

STEM Foundations: The Universal Skill Stack

Being right isn't enough — you have to be able to *explain* what you did and why, to people who aren't experts. Career-readiness research (NACE) puts communication near the top of what employers want.

A simple structure works almost everywhere: **problem → what you tried → result → what it means.** Write short. Define jargon the first time you use it. Show your reasoning, not just your answer.

The test of real understanding: can you teach it to someone else?

The skill that separates good STEM workers from great ones.

Explaining technical work clearly

Two things turn a learner into a professional:

- **Ethics and safety.** STEM work affects real people — through data privacy, lab safety, and honest reporting. Doing it responsibly, even when no one's watching, is part of the job.
- **Career evidence.** You can't just *say* you have skills; you have to *show* them. Build a portfolio of artifacts: a solved-problem notebook, a small data project, a lab report, a build. Each should show the problem, what you did, the result, and what you'd improve.

**Try it:** pick one small project idea in a field that interests you and write a one-paragraph plan — the problem, your approach, and how you'll know it worked.

Work responsibly — and collect proof that you can do the work.
