Before you start

This course builds on Electrical Circuits, Calculus & Linear Algebra for STEM and Scientific Python. Take them first if you are new to the topic.

About this course

A mid-level course for future electrical engineers that connects circuit theory to the three big areas of the field. In electronics you will bias a transistor as a switch, design op-amp amplifier stages and work with logic gates, registers and microcontroller GPIO. In signals and systems you will compute and read a frequency spectrum, design an RC low-pass filter and tune a PID loop in simulation. In power systems you will trace power from the plant to the outlet, do per-unit and two-bus load-flow calculations, see how breakers, relays and inverters protect and connect the grid, and lay out a simple board in KiCad. Prerequisites: Electrical Circuits, Calculus & Linear Algebra for STEM, and Scientific Python. All hands-on work uses Python, a browser simulator or free design software: never mains. This course builds knowledge, not a licence: electrical engineering roles need an ABET-accredited bachelor's degree, and power and utility design sign-off needs the FE exam, experience and a PE licence (see NCEES, https://ncees.org). Real designs need review by licensed, experienced engineers.
