About this course

A mid-level course for civil, mechanical and electrical engineering students and graduates preparing for professional practice. You will learn how projects move from feasibility through schematic design, design development and construction documents, and how products move through design reviews; write a checked calculation package (in Python, with units at every step); and review a contractor's submittal against a specification. The codes and standards module teaches you to find, read and cite a code clause, to tell ASME, IEEE, ASTM, ACI and other bodies apart, and to run a QA/QC check and back-check. The licensure module covers building an FE study plan from the official NCEES specification, logging qualifying experience toward the PE, and resolving ethics cases with the NSPE Code of Ethics. Licensing rules, exam details and fees change and differ by state, so lessons link to NCEES, state boards, ABET and NSPE instead of copying them. This course teaches the knowledge only: an ABET-accredited degree, the FE exam, supervised experience and the PE licence are still required to practise, and every real design needs review by a licensed engineer. Prerequisites: Foundations for Engineering & Energy Careers and Calculus & Linear Algebra for STEM.
