Before you start

This course builds on Digital Literacy for Tech & STEM Work. Take it first if you are new to the topic.

About this course

Cloud, security, database and systems work all sit on top of the network, and most "the app is down" problems turn out to be network problems. This beginner course explains how networks really work, then gives you the habits to troubleshoot them. The first module maps protocols to the OSI and TCP/IP models, teaches you to read an IPv4 address, subnet mask and CIDR prefix (with a small JavaScript subnet calculator), and explains ports and the difference between TCP and UDP. The second module covers the services every network depends on: DNS, DHCP and NAT, and HTTP with TLS, including how to inspect a website's certificate. The final module is hands-on: ping, traceroute and netstat, mapping your own home network, and capturing packets with Wireshark. Every exercise runs on your own computer and your own network, and the course points to CompTIA Network+ as an optional next step.
