Electrical Code & Installations

Open NFPA 70 (the edition your state enforces, or the 2023 edition if you are not sure) and note the edition year at the top of your page.

Read Article 90 (Introduction). Write one sentence on the code's purpose in your own words.

From the table of contents, write the chapter number and theme for Chapters 1 to 9, and mark which chapters modify Chapters 1 to 4.

Using the index only, find the section on working space around electrical equipment. Write the section number and the time it took you.

Using the index only, find the GFCI requirements for dwelling bathrooms. Write the full reference in the form 210.8(A)(1) and the time it took.

Find Article 314 and read its scope section. Write in one line what the article covers.

## Why it matters

Every installation an electrician builds is judged against one book: the **National Electrical Code (NEC)**, published by NFPA as **NFPA 70**. Inspectors cite it, exam questions are written from it, and foremen settle arguments with it. Nobody memorises the whole thing. What separates a confident apprentice from a lost one is knowing how the book is organised, so you can find the right rule in a minute or two instead of twenty.

> **Awareness level only.** This course teaches you to read and apply the code on paper. It does not qualify you to install anything. Real electrical work needs employer or apprenticeship training, supervision by a licensed electrician and, in most states, a licence. Every hands-on task in this course is done on paper, in a simulator or with batteries only: never on live circuits or mains wiring.

## The big picture: chapters, articles, parts and sections

The NEC is a legal-style document with a strict hierarchy:

- **Chapters** (1 to 9) group related subjects.
- **Articles** are the main topics, numbered by chapter. Article 210 (branch circuits) and Article 250 (grounding and bonding) live in Chapter 2; Article 314 (boxes) lives in Chapter 3.
- **Parts** (Roman numerals) split long articles. Article 430 on motors has many parts, for example one for overload protection and one for controllers.
- **Sections** are the individual rules, written as article number, a dot and a section number: 210.8 is the GFCI section of Article 210.
- **Lists and subdivisions** go deeper: 210.8(A)(1) reads "section 210.8, subdivision (A), item (1)".

The chapters fall into two groups. Chapters 1 to 4 apply generally to every installation. Chapters 5, 6 and 7 cover special occupancies, special equipment and special conditions, and they **modify or add to** Chapters 1 to 4. Chapter 8 covers communications systems and stands mostly on its own. Chapter 9 holds tables (conductor properties, conduit dimensions) that you use in calculations, and the informative annexes at the back give examples and extra guidance.

Article 90, at the very front, explains the code's purpose, scope and how it is enforced. Read it once: it says the code is about practical safeguarding of people and property, not about design efficiency or convenience.

## Mandatory rules, permissive rules and notes

Learn to read the wording, because it changes what a sentence means:

- **"Shall"** or **"shall not"** is a mandatory rule.
- **"Shall be permitted"** allows something but does not require it.
- An **Exception** follows a rule and describes when the rule does not apply (or applies differently).
- An **Informational Note** explains or points elsewhere. It is **not** an enforceable requirement.

Example: a voltage-drop recommendation in Article 210 is an informational note, so an inspector cannot fail you on it alone. A GFCI requirement in 210.8 uses "shall", so it is mandatory.

## Finding a rule with the index

There are three ways in, and good electricians use all three:

1. **Index** (back of the book). Look up the thing, not the problem. To find bathroom receptacle rules, try "Receptacles", then "bathrooms", or "Bathrooms", then "receptacles". The index points you to section numbers.
2. **Table of contents**. Useful when you know the topic is an article of its own, such as "Swimming pools" (Article 680).
3. **Article scope**. Each article starts with a scope section (for example 314.1). If you are unsure you are in the right place, read the scope first.

Worked example: "How much working space is required in front of a panel?" The index entry "Working space" sends you to 110.26 in Chapter 1. Reading the section, you find the depth, width and height rules, with a table that varies the depth by voltage and condition. You do not need to memorise the table, just remember "working space, 110.26".

## Tabs and highlighting

Most exam boards allow a bound code book with permanent tabs, and many allow highlighting but not handwritten notes. Rules differ by state and by exam provider, so check your candidate handbook before you mark up a book. A common approach is one tab per frequently used article (100, 110, 210, 220, 240, 250, 310, 314, 430, Chapter 9) plus the index.

## Editions change

NFPA revises the NEC every three years. As checked on 2026-10-23, the **2023 edition** of NFPA 70 is the edition most widely enforced, and NFPA has released the 2026 edition, which some states are now adopting. Sections move and renumber between editions, so always say which edition you are quoting. ## Common mistakes

- Treating an informational note as a requirement, or ignoring an exception that applies.
- Quoting a section from a different edition than the one your jurisdiction enforces.
- Applying a Chapter 3 rule without checking whether a Chapter 5–7 article modifies it.
- Searching the index for the problem ("panel too close to wall") instead of the thing ("working space").

## Why it matters

The NEC is precise about words. "Grounded" and "grounding" mean different conductors; a "receptacle" is not the same as an "outlet"; and whether a load is "continuous" changes how big the wire and breaker must be. Exam questions often hinge on a single definition, and so do inspection calls. If you misread a defined term, you misapply the rule that uses it.

> **Awareness level only.** Reading definitions is safe desk work, but applying them in the field requires employer or apprenticeship training and supervision by a licensed electrician.

## Where definitions live

**Article 100** holds the definitions used in two or more articles. Since the 2023 edition, Article 100 also collects most definitions that used to sit at the start of individual articles, so look there first. A few articles still carry their own terms. When a word is defined, the code means exactly that definition, not the everyday meaning.

Use Article 100 alphabetically, the way you would use a dictionary. When a section uses a word you are unsure about, stop and look it up before applying the rule.

## Key definitions to know cold

These terms come up in almost every lesson of this course. The wording below is a plain-English paraphrase: read the exact definitions in the code book.

- **Ampacity**: the maximum current a conductor can carry continuously under the conditions of use without exceeding its temperature rating.
- **Continuous load**: a load where the maximum current is expected to continue for **three hours or more**. Continuous loads usually require the branch circuit and overcurrent device to be sized at 125% of the load.
- **Branch circuit**: the circuit conductors between the final overcurrent device (the breaker or fuse) and the outlets.
- **Feeder**: conductors between the service equipment (or another power source) and the final branch-circuit overcurrent device.
- **Service**: the conductors and equipment that deliver energy from the utility to the premises wiring system.
- **Outlet**: a point on the wiring system where current is taken to supply equipment. A receptacle outlet, a lighting outlet and a smoke-alarm box are all outlets.
- **Receptacle**: a contact device installed at an outlet for the connection of an attachment plug. A duplex receptacle is **two** receptacles on one yoke.
- **Grounded conductor**: a system conductor that is intentionally grounded, usually the neutral (white or gray).
- **Equipment grounding conductor (EGC)**: the conductive path that connects normally non-current-carrying metal parts together and back to the system grounded conductor or grounding electrode conductor (green, green-yellow or bare). It carries fault current, not normal current.
- **Bonding (bonded)**: connected to establish electrical continuity and conductivity.
- **Readily accessible**: capable of being reached quickly, without climbing over obstacles, removing obstacles or using portable ladders.
- **Qualified person**: one who has the skills and knowledge related to the construction and operation of the equipment and has received safety training to recognise and avoid the hazards involved.
- **Dwelling unit**: a single unit providing complete and independent living facilities, including permanent provisions for living, sleeping, cooking and sanitation.
- **Approved**: acceptable to the **authority having jurisdiction (AHJ)**, usually the electrical inspector.

## Worked examples

**Is it continuous?** A store's display lighting runs from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Maximum current continues for more than three hours, so it is a continuous load. A 16 A continuous load needs a circuit rated at least 16 × 1.25 = 20 A.

**Outlet or receptacle?** A kitchen countertop has six duplex receptacles on one circuit. That is six receptacle outlets but twelve receptacles. Questions that ask "how many receptacles" and "how many outlets" have different answers.

**Grounded vs grounding.** On a 120 V circuit, current flows out on the black (ungrounded) conductor and back on the white (grounded) conductor. The bare copper (equipment grounding conductor) carries current only during a fault, long enough to trip the breaker. Mixing up "grounded" and "grounding" is one of the most common exam errors.

**Readily accessible.** A disconnect mounted above a ceiling tile, reachable only with a ladder, is accessible but not **readily** accessible. Rules that say "readily accessible" are not met.

## Other general rules in Chapter 1

Article 110 sets requirements for every installation. A few you will use constantly:

- Equipment must be **listed** or labelled where required, and installed per its listing and instructions (110.3(B)).
- Work must be done in a "neat and workmanlike manner" (110.12).
- Terminations must respect conductor and terminal temperature ratings (110.14(C)), which affects conductor sizing.
- Working space in front of electrical equipment (110.26), so a person can work safely.

## Common mistakes

- Using everyday meanings for defined words ("outlet" as a synonym for "receptacle").
- Forgetting the three-hour test for continuous loads, or applying 125% to a non-continuous load.
- Calling the neutral the "ground".
- Ignoring "readily" in "readily accessible".

Introduction to Article 100 (Definitions) of the NEC

Open NFPA's NEC enforcement maps (https://www.nfpa.org/education-and-research/electrical/nec-enforcement-maps) and write down which edition is listed for your state.

Find your state's electrical licensing board or building codes office website. Confirm the adopted NEC edition and its effective date.

Look for any state amendments to the NEC and write down two of them (or note that there are none).

Find your city or county building department's page on electrical permits. Note who may pull an electrical permit and whether homeowners may for their own home.

Write down the inspections the department lists (for example rough-in, service and final) and how they are requested.

On the state board's site, find the licence levels (apprentice, journeyman, master or contractor) and the supervised hours required for a journeyman licence.

Find one registered apprenticeship programme near you on https://www.apprenticeship.gov or through a local union or contractor association.

Summarise on one page: code edition, amendments, AHJ, permit rules, licence path and the date you checked.

## Why it matters

The NEC is a model code. NFPA writes it, but it has no legal force until a government **adopts** it. States, counties and cities decide which edition to enforce, when it takes effect and what to change. Two jobs an hour apart can be governed by different editions with different local amendments. Before you study for an exam, quote a rule or plan a job, you need to know which code applies where you work.

> **Awareness level only.** Knowing the rules for your area does not authorise you to do electrical work. Permits, licences and supervision rules decide who may do what. Apprentices work under a licensed electrician and their employer's training.

## How adoption works

1. **NFPA publishes** a new edition every three years after a public revision process.
2. **A state or local government adopts** it by law or regulation, usually with an effective date months or years after publication. Some states adopt statewide; in others each city or county adopts its own.
3. **Amendments** may delete, add or change sections. A city might require metal conduit in commercial buildings, change GFCI requirements or delay a new rule.
4. **The authority having jurisdiction (AHJ)** enforces it. Article 90 gives the AHJ responsibility for interpreting the rules, approving equipment and materials, and granting special permission. In practice the AHJ is the electrical inspector or the building department, and sometimes an insurer or a facility owner.

The map is a starting point; your state's licensing board or building codes office is the official source, and local amendments come from the city or county.

## Licensing is separate from adoption

The code says **how** work must be done. Licensing law says **who** may do it. States differ widely:

- Most states license electricians at the state level (apprentice registration, journeyman, master or contractor). A few leave licensing to cities and counties.
- Licences usually require documented supervised hours (often around 8,000 for a journeyman, typically through a registered apprenticeship of about four to five years), classroom hours and a passing exam.
- Reciprocity agreements may let a licence from one state count in another, but only where both states agree.

The US Department of Labor lists registered apprenticeship programmes at [Apprenticeship.gov](https://www.apprenticeship.gov). Checked on 2026-10-23. Fees, hour counts and exam rules change, so always read the current rules on your state board's official website rather than a forum post or old video.

## Permits and inspections

Most electrical work beyond replacing like-for-like devices needs a **permit** from the local building department. The permit triggers **inspections**, typically:

- **Rough-in**: after boxes, cables and raceways are installed but before walls are closed.
- **Service**: before the utility connects power.
- **Final**: when devices, fixtures and panels are complete.

Who may pull a permit varies. Usually it is a licensed electrical contractor; some jurisdictions let homeowners pull permits for their own single-family home, with conditions. Apprentices do not pull permits.

## Worked example: answering "what code applies here?"

Suppose you are starting an apprenticeship in a mid-sized city.

1. Check the NFPA enforcement map: suppose it shows your state on the 2023 edition.
2. Check the state electrical board's website: it confirms the 2023 NEC, effective on a given date, with a short list of state amendments.
3. Check the city building department's site: it lists local amendments, for example requiring a particular wiring method in multifamily buildings.
4. Write it down: "State: 2023 NEC with state amendments; City: plus local amendments; AHJ: city electrical inspection division."

Now you know which book to buy, which edition your exam uses (exam editions can lag adoption) and whose interpretation counts.

## Common mistakes

- Assuming the newest edition applies everywhere.
- Using a video from another state as if its amendments were yours.
- Confusing the code (how) with licensing law (who).
- Forgetting that the AHJ's interpretation is final on a given job, even if another inspector reads it differently.
